Chile: Abrria y Abajo

This 2019 spring break, April 28-March 9, the Photographic Communications program at Northwest College lead a group of twenty-three students, faculty and community members to Chile. This was the sixteenth spring break trip that the Photographic Communications program organized but it was the first trip lead by Jennifer Litterer-Treviño, Instructor of Photography. Similar to other trips, Chile provided a valuable opportunity for Northwest College students to experience the challenges of travel photography within the structure of a multicultural experience.

The Abrria y Abajo exhibit, which translates from Spanish to up and down, showcases photographs from fourteen students, faculty and community members. The images represent both the metaphorically and geographically theme of up and down. The trip began in capital city of Santiago, where students acclimate to the late summer weather and cityscapes. Santiago has a rich culture of mixing old colonial Spanish architecture with newer modern buildings. After a couple days in Santiago, the group took a flight down to Punta Arenas, which is the southern tip of country and in the Patagonia region. During the second morning in Punta Arenas the group rode a boat to visit Magellanic penguins on Magdalena Island in the Strait of Magellan. The following day the group flew back to Santiago and spent the remainder of the trip visiting the port cities, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, and a tour of the Concha y Toro winery.
